Class of 2020, Major in Biology

  • Marjan Khan ’20

Marjan interned at the Hospital for Special Surgery as an undergraduate Biology major, and she was hired as a Research Technician at HSS directly after graduation.

“I work at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) as a Research Technician in the Precision Medicine Laboratory. My main projects focus on the molecular and cellular pathways of osteoarthritis (OA), as well as therapeutics for OA. In particular, I am looking into potential therapeutic biomarkers to target in patients that are prone to developing stiffness and fibrosis after total knee replacement. Within this study, I drive a project that looks into the biomarkers present in total knee replacement patients who had COVID. I also work with the HSS Regenerative Medicine Center to drive a project looking into Platelet-Rich Plasma as an alternative non-surgical treatment for knee OA. Due to the collaborative environment of the Orthopedic Soft Tissue Research Department, I am able to help my co-workers with other studies, including those that take place in the OR, giving me a great overall perspective into Orthopedics. I enjoy the research I do because I know it will be able to improve the quality of life for patients.”
