Lia Leon Margolin

Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Associate Professor

Dr. Lia  Margolin received her Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics from Tbilisi State University, Georgia. She was a Senior Research Scientist in the Nuclear Physics Department of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia. Dr. Margolin was awarded a J. Soros International Science Foundation grant for her original research in physics of light hypernuclei and a Diplomate in Mathematical Physics for her original work as a research fellow at the Institute of Cybernetics of Georgian Technical University. She is also a recipient of the Career Education Corporation’s Educator of the Year Award and two University of Phoenix distinguished teaching awards. Dr.Margolin joined Marymount Manhattan in 2006. She developed two (blended and online) Natural Science courses for the Advanced Interdisciplinary Perspectives (AIP) requirement of the general education curriculum. She was awarded MMC Online and Blended Course Development Grants and two Mellon Foundation grants to enhance her Advanced Interdisciplinary courses and support her research in Mathematics pedagogy. She was selected by STEM Talent Expansion Program Center as an external expert to review the Modeling Earth Systems curricula materials developed for the InTeGrate Project funded by NSF. In 2019 Dr.Margolin was invited by the International Research Conference Scientific and Technical Committee to serve on Editorial Review Board on Nuclear and Quantum Engineering. Dr.Margolin also serves as an University Research Methodologist at the University of Phoenix College of Doctoral Studies. She conducts dissertation quality reviews, mentors doctoral students,  and facilitates online doctoral dissertation seminars. Dr.Margolin has ongoing research collaborations with the Institute of Cybernetics and Institute of Physics in Tbilisi, Georgia.  She invites undergraduate students to participate in her research.

Research

  Dr. Margolin’s current research interests are in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Theoretical Nuclear Physics, and Quantum Nanophysics. She has ongoing collaboration as a Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Holographic Recording and Processing of Information of The Institute of Cybernetics in Georgia. She presented her current research at  the at the 6-th International Conference in Physics (EuroPhysics2020) and International Conference on Meson-Nucleon Physics and the Structure of the Nucleon (MENU 2019) held at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA in June, 2019. She is also invited to present at ICNP2020 International Conference in Nuclear Physics that will be held in December, 2020 in New York, NY. She presented her recent at the AMS Spring 2017 Conference in New York, the International Nuclear Physics Conference in Florence, Italy in June, 2013 and at Hawaii University International Conference on Education &STEM in June, 2014. Dr. Margolin led student-faculty collaborative research project in mathematics education and presented at Hawaii University International Conference in Mathematics and Engineering Technologies several times. She continuous her research in mathematics education and investigates strategies for increasing student motivation and success in mathematics.
