“As a Statistics and Data Analysis intern at VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, I had the opportunity to conduct research on the impact of grassroots humanitarian medical work at the local and national economic levels. More specifically, I assessed the impact of children’s corrective heart surgeries on families and the larger community. This research focused on rural Vietnam, an area that struggles with high poverty rates and poor health care systems. My work helped to highlight the economic benefits of international non-governmental organizations medical programs on families and communities. The data collected from this research looked at the socio-economic and financial variables of VCF’s beneficiary families for 113 families out of the 240 families contacted. This study found most families indeed saw improvements in their finances after surgery, a finding I investigated with advanced data analysis techniques on Microsoft Excel. On the whole, this experience increased my confidence in communicating my research to those outside my field and improved my intercultural skills. My experience of evaluating the financial and socio-economic impact of the beneficiary families has given me a real understanding of the practical applications of health policy on communities as well as its impact on the economy of Vietnam.”

In 2017, Jennifer was selected for the Watson Fellowship, a “selective three-year fellowship that develops the potential of promising students to become effective and humane leaders.” As part of this program Jennifer engaged in hand-on projects that helped her strengthen her leadership skills.

In summer 2016, Jennifer worked at The Office of Manhattan Borough President, managing and coordinating a variety of issues ranging from Pre-K enrollment, domestic violence, child abuse and eviction.

In summer 2017, Jennifer interned at Echoing Green, NYC, a program that aims to support emerging social entrepreneurs as they propose efficient solutions to society’s problems. Jennifer developed the website and communication plan for Echoing Green and analyzed project data.

In summer 2018, Jennifer served as Development, Research & Data Analysis Intern, VinaCapital Foundation, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The focus of the study was to assess the microeconomic impact of cardiac medical interventions provided to pediatric patients on their families and the larger community. Jennifer also collaborated with the PR & Events department on A Brighter Path, a girls’ education and empowerment event, as she developed the program schedule and managed on-site logistics. Finally, Jennifer edited stories profiling Heartbeat Vietnam beneficiaries and their families to be published on the VinaCapital website and included in the organization’s monthly newsletter to donors.

In spring 2019, Jennifer interned at Her Justice Inc., NYC. In this role, Jennifer provided administrative and client support to Her Justice’s legal assistants by directing informational materials to the Legal Help Line and gathered feedback on how the organization could improve its services.

In summer 2019, Jennifer interned at 100 Resilient Cities in Melbourne, Australia. This project pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, aims to help cities become socially and economically resilient. Jennifer worked at project sites in Melbourne, to assess collaborative decision-making methods across the city and to create opportunities for communities to be more cohesive and equitable.

Jennifer’s contributions to the MMC community are numerous, encompassing service as: Senior Marshall, Students Activities Advisory Board Member, HEOP Peer Mentor, Marymount Community Outreach Treasurer, Alternative Spring Break Team Leader, Sole Steppers Vice President, and Wellness Educator. In honor of Jennifer’s numerous contributions, the college bestowed upon Jennifer Acevedo, the coveted 2019 Raymunde McKay award, to honor “the senior who has made an outstanding contribution towards meeting the problems and demands of our society through service at MMC and in the larger community.”
