MMC Food Scholars Publish New Chapter on “Hipster Aesthetics”

MMC congratulates Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, Kathleen LeBesco, Ph.D., and Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, Peter Naccarato, Ph.D., whose co-authored book chapter “Brooklyn: Hipster Aesthetics, Foodways, and the Cultural Imaginary” has been published in a new edited collection, Global Brooklyn: Designing Food Experiences in World Cities.
Global Brooklyn follows the global circulation of the Brooklyn aesthetic around the globe, arguing for a stronger appreciation of design and materialities in understanding food cultures.
“This collection is more timely than ever, as we find ourselves waxing nostalgic about stylized, communal food experiences in the time before COVID—the kinds of food experiences that have drawn MMC students to New York from all over the country and the world,” says Dr. LeBesco. “We couldn’t have imagined sub-zero yurt dining on the streets of Brooklyn when we wrote our chapter, though!”
The MMC community is invited to attend the virtual launch panel hosted by New York University on Wednesday, February 17 at 6 p.m., where Drs. LeBesco and Naccarato, alongside other contributors, will engage in a conversation and Q&A about the influence and transformation of food cultures around the world. Dr. LeBesco and Dr. Naccarato are leading international scholars of food culture and popular media. Before Global Brooklyn, the two have collaborated on books including The Bloomsbury Handbook of Food and Popular Culture (2017), Culinary Capital (2012), and Edible Ideologies (2008).
