Nolie Wagner ’19 Awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship

Fulbright is the world’s largest and most diverse international educational exchange program. In Uzbekistan, Wagner will help students improve their speaking and writing skills in English. She will also participate in school-related activities and, in this way, act as an ambassador as she shares her knowledge of US cultures with her Uzbek students. Additionally, Wagner will participate in community outreach and cultural activities, such as conversation groups at local American Centers. 

Wagner has engaged deeply and enthusiastically with women’s rights and international education issues during her years at MMC. In Summer 2016, she traveled to Cambodia to work at an orphanage, where she taught English and developed her knowledge of teaching systems. In Fall 2017, she took part in MMC’s United Nations Program, working as a full-time intern for the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM). With RSHM, she helped develop written statements for the Commission on Social Development and the Commission on the Status of Women. On top of her academic undertakings, Wagner has been a Resident Advisor since 2016, helping students acclimate socially and academically to college life. All of these activities and others have prepared her for her Fulbright experience. 

Wagner’s application was supported by MMC faculty members Jennifer Mueller, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of International Studies; Andreas Hernandez, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of International Studies; and Erin O’Connor, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Politics and Human Rights.
